More Christmas Song Analysis

It is well known that I have issues with some Christmas song (see here and here). Here's a few more:

Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer

The song is pretty bad (The Good Place is right). Further, Grandpa is an awful person. Not only does he not care that his wife is dead, but he also let her stagger home alone and drunk on Christmas Eve.

I'll Be Home for Christmas

A minor point granted, but how can you put presents on the tree? Did Christmas trees use to be stronger? Luckily, modern versions have changed it to "round the tree".

Do They Know It's Christmas?

There actually is snow in Africa. In South Africa, during June and July, but high altitude areas such as Kilimanjaro and the Atlas Mountains do get December snow.

The Little Drummer Boy

Sister Carita (who taught me at St. Mary's) loved this song. She said that it showed that we always needed to give our best to Jesus. The problem is it's an unaccompanied drum. That's not soothing or even good music. You could say that it's the thought that counts, but maybe think of something else.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

This song has a number of anachronisms. The most egregious is that there will be "scary ghost stories". I can assume this refers to A Christmas Carol. However, A) it's not that scary and B) who actually reads it annually anymore (other than my house).

My Issues with Harry Potter: Part 4 - The Education System

Okay, maybe it's because I'm not British, but the education system in the Wizarding world makes very little sense to me (a teacher). Granted, the American system doesn't make sense to much of the rest of the world. Here in the US, we don't have college entrance exams, so I won't criticize things like OWLs or NEWTs. However, I am going to have to criticize the entire theory of education. Primary Schooling A Hogwarts letter arrives on a student's 11th birthday (sort of). What are the options for students before they are 11? Rowling says that they may either go to public schools or they are home schooled. It sure seems like most magical parents choose the latter option (most wizards know nothing of the Muggle world, which should not be the case if they attended public school for 6 years). Here we run into our first problem. What exactly are these children being taught? In the US (and from what I can tell, the UK), parents are not required to fol...

Analyzing Goertz Memes

I often find myself on the Savio meme pages. Let's take a look at a few: 1. Handbooks I do read it quite a bit. We do some massive updating each summer. 2. Airpods I'm an Android user myself. I do think of the Airpod memes everything students walk past me wearing their earbuds (against the handbook, by the way). 3. Caaaw! Dr. Garcia started the noise. I don't do it as well. 4. Let it Go Well, yes. I was the one with the microphone and tiara. 5. Blue Shirt/Gold Tie Thank you. I think I look pretty good as well. 6. Saturated Because one time I said that the grass was saturated with rainwater. 7. Lunch There's a lot of lunch memes about me. Yes, I walk up and join conversations. I'm a socially awkward person, but it's allowed when you are an administrator. 8. Doors If you go through the wrong doors, I will find you and I will stop you. 9. History I don't know. Also, apparently my name no longer has a Z. Alright! First post in years.

Board Games

Back to posting with a relatively simple one. Students, you may or may not know this, but the board games that are in the Commons are from my collection *. My hope is that someday everyone will put down their cellphones and pick up a game instead. I really enjoy board games (although I don't play them as often as I would like). I'm not talking chess and checkers. I'm not even talking Monopoly and Scrabble. While those are technically board games, the genre has come a long way in the past few decades. Here's a few of my favorites (I'll use the term "board game" loosely, as some of these don't actually use a board). (Settlers of**) Catan If you're familiar with modern board games, you probably know this one. It first came out in 1995 and its popularity really exploded. Collect resources Build towns, cities, and roads. Each has different point values. First player to 10 points wins. It's a very good entry point due to the straightforward rules. T...
